Traffic Hazards
This is from my local paper (Guardian Express July 3 - 9):
"The other strange phenomenon I've observed is what I call The Bubble of Invincibility. This bubble can be observed any time of day on Bay View Terrace, Rokeby Road or Oxford Street. It appears to be a fashion accessory for blonde-haired women alighting from 4WD vehicles, but other pedestrians also possess it.
The Bubble of Invincibility allows you to walk on to the road without looking for oncoming traffic. With the bubble you never, ever check whether a car is about to run you over. Your wealth and perceived status have immunised you to the possibility of accident or fatal death through colliding with a motor vehicle. Caught up in shopping reveries, you are totally oblivious to your surroundings. While of great benefit to the conceited pedestrian, the bubble can cause untold stress to the poor driver who chooses to navigate down these boulevards of affluence."
Often, my wife and I wryly joke about taking out Invincibles at the knees.

It's not just when they're pedestrians. I noticed this in October 2005:
Instead of getting to work at a reasonable hour, I spent a pleasant THIRTY MINUTES sitting in the bus shelter, watching the perma-tanned trophy wives of Mosman Park lurching their Volvo XC90s and BMW X5s out of the nearby Muzz Buzz, in an apparently firm belief that it would be unthinkable for the proles not to get out of their way.
There were no fiery crashes, so maybe they're onto something.
or boulevards of effluence, as Kath and Kim, those pillars of southern hemispherical proletaria, would say.
This sort of solipsistic attitude is why I put air horns in my car: people don't expect the noise of a truck to come out of a 1.3 litre rustbucket.
They wouldn't expect a finger, either, but I'm supposed to be a Christian.
They're worth at least fifty points if you hit them... double if they bounce.
;)
