Coffee-Roasting Popcorn-Makers
Some friends recently discovered that popcorn-makers are a cheap way to roast coffee, and last weekend they gave us a demonstration. Mmmmm, freshly roasted coffee. Pics of our three roasts are below (clockwise, from the top: dark, light and medium). The beans were arabica.

The unanimous favourite was the dark roast. Needless to say, after the tastings our collective mood spiked dramatically--thankfully it was morning.

NB: if you buy a popcorn-maker, try to roast some coffee, and it tastes like sink water, please don't shoot the messenger!

The question that immediately springs to my mind is "How exactly did your friends discover that popcorn makers can roast coffee?"
Bland,
How does one discover anything in this world of ours: the Internet! (Of course, they probably "googled" it, as the buzzword goes.)
Chris
You young people with your googling and your inter-net and your popcorn coffee and your popcorn chicken! In my day we just bought coffee in a jar and kept our googles to ourselves!
Harumph.
I suppose you recycled your tea bags as well. Bland, you are showing your age ;)
Hey Chris
Just found your blog after following you here from Tim. Nice one.
Have you tried the Fair Trade coffee from the Oxfam shop? The Timorese stuff is really nice, although you don;t get to enjoy roasting it.
Hi Stevo
Cheers and thanks for the tip. I've heard the Fair Trade coffee is good, but have not tried it - will have to do so. (Our coffee-of-choice is Essenza, which is roasted around the corner from us. Have you tried it?)
Hi Chad
Look forward to talking with you.
Chris
Any idea how long you let them cook for?
Hi Jon
I wasn't watching the clock, but I'd say it was 3 to 6 minutes, depending on the roast.
We watched the beans closely as they were roasting, to make sure we didn't burn them! I'd say this is the safest way to go.
Cheers
Chris

interesting that you get lots of comments about coffee - that's a sign of the decadent 70 & 80's children
